The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and the Colorado Department of Revenue’s Marijuana Enforcement Division has teamed up to create new rules around edibles. These were implemented October 1 to ensure public health and safety for all residents. They are in place to safeguard children and minors and keep products out of the hands of illegal operations.
Medical and Retail Packaging:
• All new medical and retail marijuana packaging must feature the new universal symbol on the front. Packaging must include the following statement directly below the symbol: “Contains Marijuana. Keep out of the reach of children.”
• Retail marijuana-specific universal symbol rules:
o Every single standardized serving (a serving consists of 10 mg of THC) of an edible retail marijuana product must be individually marked, stamped, or imprinted with the new universal symbol.
o When impractical to mark an edible retail marijuana product with the universal symbol, as in the case of bulk goods and powders, these products must be packaged in a single serving, child-resistant container.
o In an edible retail marijuana product that contains multiple servings, every single standardized serving must be marked, stamped, or imprinted with the universal symbol.
• Medical marijuana-specific universal symbol rules:
o Edible medical marijuana-infused products must be marked, stamped, or imprinted with the universal symbol.
o Medical marijuana-infused product manufacturers may choose to determine standard portions. Each portion must be marked, stamped, or imprinted with the universal symbol.
Other important marijuana packaging rules going into effect Oct. 1:
• Colorado no longer will allow marijuana edibles shaped like humans, animals, fruits, or cartoons — forms that could be confused with candy — and the state also will require more prominently displayed potency information on the labels of cannabis products.
• The words “candy” or “candies” cannot appear on marijuana or marijuana packaging unless part of the marijuana establishment’s name.
• Each container of medical and retail marijuana must be labeled with necessary and relevant information for consumers, including a potency statement and a contaminant testing statement. The information must be easily accessible to consumers, clear and noticeable. Health and physical benefit claims cannot be included on labels.

2017: Colorado Grow Company Talks Pot Predictions For The New Year
Change is in the air as we approach the New Year. Both Forbes and CNBC are forecasting what to expect in the marijuana industry in 2017. Here are the top predictions from Colorado Grow Company – no crystal ball required.
- Los Angeles will surpass Denver as the marijuana capital in the United States and take on the world as top pot spot. Recreational cannabis was legalized in LA in this past November’s election. The current medical market in LA is estimated to be over $1billion – which is more than the total recreational and medical market of Colorado.
- A major U.S. sports league will approve and endorse the use of cannabis for professional athletes. Marijuana has a history of providing pain relief and is a good alternative to addictive prescription opioid drugs.
- A cannabis themed primetime television show will take the airwaves on a major network. It all started with Weeds on Showtime over a decade ago. HBO has had High Maintenance since 2012 and MTV launched Mary + Jane this year. Adam Scott from Parks and Recreation has been working with NBC to develop a network show called Buds about a dispensary in Denver. 2017 could be the year for it.
- Increased interest and production of synthetic CBD and THC. The new DEA schedule for CBD, puts this medicinal non-psychoactive cannabinoid in the same class as heroin. The concern about legal issues around these substances could give rise to more synthetics.
