Know Your Cannabis: Indica vs Sativa
Colorado Grow Company in Durango, Colorado breaks down the different strains for your knowledge: Indica vs Sativa
It is generally accepted in the world of cannabis that there are three strains: Cannabis Indica, Cannabis Sativa and the less familiar Cannabis Ruderalis.
Ruderalis, you may not recognize this scientific name as it is commonly known as “ditch weed” or hemp. This strain is a native to Russia. It has no psychoactive properties, but is valuable for its nutritive seeds and fiber properties.
Indica was first classified by a French biologist in 1785. This strain is thought to originate near India, in the Kush region of Afghanistan, as the name suggests. The Indica plant is short and bushy with wide leaves. The plant adapted to the extreme conditions in this mountain region by developing a dense THC resin to protect and propagate itself. It can typically have a more purple color and is known for its signature skunky smell.
Pure Indica strains include Skunk, Afghani and Hindu Kush. The high from Indica is a body dominant high. Indica consumption increases the feel good dopamine in the brain. The therapeutic properties of this strain include sleep inducer, appetite stimulant, pain reliever, reduces nausea and muscle relaxant. It is best for night time consumption as it can induce “couch lock”.
Sativa is native to the warmer climates of South America, Central America, Mexico, and Southeast Asia. The Sativa plant is much taller and less dense than the Indica plant. It has longer, narrower leaves. In warm environments, the plant takes on a reddish hue. The aroma of this plant is lighter and fruitier.
Pure Sativa strains include Panama Red, Hawaiian and Thai. The high is mind dominant. It can increase alertness, creativity, energy and attention. The therapeutic qualities include anti-depression, anti-anxiety and uplifting. Sativa is preferred by many to for day time consumption.
